Multnomah Falls is Oregon’s tallest waterfall.
Multnomah Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls and is on most top 10 list of waterfalls of the world. The reason that most people think it is one of the top waterfalls is the walking bridge that crosses in front of the waterfalls in the middle of the waterfall and separates the upper and lower sections of the waterfalls. The bridge is a distinctive feature to these waterfalls and makes the Multnomah Fall unique and unlike any other waterfall.
Multnomah Falls is located on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge along the Columbia River Highway East of Portland. The falls are 620 feet tall and drops in two major steps. The upper falls drops 542 feet and the lower falls drops 69 feet with a gradual 9 foot drop of 9 feet between the two major falls.
More beautiful than the pictures
I had wanted to see Multnomah Falls for many years before I finally had the chance to experience seeing them. I was very excited on the day that I saw the falls and as I was walking the trail to get to the fall the anticipation was building to the point that I was expecting to be disappointed. Luckily the fall lived up to my expectations and I found myself not wanting to leave. When you first arrive you will see the overall view of the falls and the bridge that makes the falls famous. The photos below show the upper and lower fall in line with each other and slightly offset.
Up-close View
If you continue on the trail up to the bridge you will get a completely different view of the falls. You will be able to look up at the upper falls and down the lower falls and see from above the pond where the falls creates. The bridge really enables you to have a view of waterfalls that is not available to any other waterfall that I know. The photos below are of the upper and lower falls and the pond looking down from above.
Looking down from the bridge will give you a bird’s eye view of the pond and the river flowing from the pond. The pond seems small for the amount of water flowing from the waterfalls.
A beautiful trail
Sometimes the main attraction is so overwhelming that it is easy to overlook some interesting sites that are really nice. This is the case at Multnomah Falls. When you are walking along the trail to the bridge the walk itself is beautiful. The trees along the trail are covered with green moss that makes the forest a little mystical. This may be common for this part of the Northwest U. S. but for me, not being from this area, I found it to be unusual and beautiful. The photos below are from along the trail to the walking bridge.
The Dust on My Shoes
Many of the destinations that I will feature are from very remote locations around the world but Multnomah Fall is located in the United States and is surprisingly easy to access. Literally, anyone can easily get to the viewing point of the Multnomah Waterfalls and if you have any desire to see a beautiful creation of nature then you should make plans to visit Multnomah Falls. You will be glad that you did!
Seeing the waterfalls from the viewpoint is wonderful but with just a little effort the close up view at the bridge provides a completely different perspective and the scenery along the trail is really beautiful. So many times in my travels, getting to my desired destination has taken me through beautiful areas. I have learned to take my time and enjoy the journey getting to my destinations.
Get the most from your travels by finding sites to see between primary destinations. Many times the journey is just as beautiful as the destination!
