Victuals Market was originally a farmers market but it has now turned into one of the top sights in the center of Munich.
Victuals Market is located in the heart of Munich’s historic city center. It received is name from the Latin word “victus” which is synonymous for food. The market has transitioned from a farmers market and herbal market to a favorite place for foodies. Visitors can find traditional Bavarian foods along with other international produce.
Maypole
Maypoles are common to Bavarian villages and are normally painted in the state colors of white and blue with images showing local activities and village life. The maypole in the Victuals Market was installed on May 4, 1962 in the center of the market square.
Outdoor Market
Victuals Market consists of around 100 stalls selling fruits, vegetables, fish and meat. There are also restaurants selling food to eat al fresco and some shops sell hand crafts and souvenirs.
Food, beer garden and souvenirs
There is no reason to go hungry or thirsty when visiting the Victuals Market. Many stalls sell fruits and vegetables for the locals to take home and prepare but there are also restaurants to sit down and have a meal and stalls selling traditional foods to eat on the go. Obviously, it should go without saying that any market in Germany will have at least one beer garden to enjoy the local brews and there are also coffee shops if you are a coffee junky (like me).
Victuals Market is not only a place to eat and drink but it is also a place to shop for local crafts and souvenirs. There are stalls in the market that sells products that cannot be found anywhere else so it is a good place to shop if you are looking for a one of a kind item or a unique souvenir.
The Dust on My Shoes
Visiting local markets is an activity that I always enjoy when I travel to new locations. I think that local markets are a bridge between the past culture and the current culture. Many local markets are in the same location where they have been for decades or even centuries giving them the feeling that they are historic places but the vendors themselves sell items that are suited for the current culture.
Every local market that I have visited has food stalls selling traditional food that is easy to get a quick snack while site seeing. Eating traditional food during my travels is one of the top experiences that I look forward to in every location that I visit so having a Frankfurter Würstchen is a on my list of foods to eat before leaving Germany.
Experiencing local cultures is part of all of my travel and one of the easiest ways to have a cultural experience in my travels is to visit a local market!
