The King Power Mahanakhon Tower is unquestionably one of the most recognizable structures in Bangkok.
Until recently, the King Power Mahanakhon Tower has been the tallest building in Thailand which has just been surpassed by the Magnolias Waterfront Residence by a mere four meters but at 314 meters (1030 ft.) tall it is still the most attention getting building in the city. The primary reason is because of its distinctive pixelated exterior design. From the midway point to the top of the tower there are appears to be missing sections of the building that look like they have fallen off the building.
The King Power MahaNakhon is a mixed use building that features retail spaces, a hotel, residences and an observatory. The bottom floors are used as retail space covering an area of 110,000 square feet. Above the retail space up to the 20th floor is occupied by a hotel. From the 20th floor to the 73rd floor is occupied by 209 luxury residences with starting prices over $1 million each. On top of the residences is a multi-story observation rooftop offering panoramic views of the Bangkok cityscape.
MahaNakhon Square
Located in front of the King Power MahaNakhon Tower is a large open area called MahaNakhon Square. The plaza is a public area with a really nice view of the tower. Standing in the center of the plaza and looking straight up helps to appreciate the height of the tower.
At the entrance into the tower is a statue of Erawan, the mythical white elephant with 33 heads that carries Indra, the Hindu god.
King Power MahaNakhon Lobby
Inside the lobby, near the ticket counter for the King Power MahaNakhon Skywalk, are two signs that provide prospective about how the tower compares to other towers in Thailand and around the world. It is the highest observation deck in Thailand and it is taller than the Eiffel Tower but shorter than the Tokyo Tower.
Skyline views of the tower
Most people come to Thailand to see the traditional Thai structures but Bangkok’s urban landscape has more to offer than grand temples. The skyline view of the tower really makes a statement for the Bangkok cityscape. The four photos below shoe the King Power Mahanakhon Tower from two different directions. The first two photos show the tower during the day and near sunset. The second two photos show the tower during the daytime and at sunrise.
Murals of Bangkok
On the stairway walls in the multi-level skywalk is a set of modern style murals that illustrate daily life in Bangkok. I always enjoy seeing this type of art and I felt it was appropriate for the location of being in a place where visitors can look out and see the entire city below them.
The Dust on My Shoes
Bangkok is one of those places that seems to have never ending number of places to see and things to do. Historical sites and temples are almost everywhere in the city but the King Power Mahanakhon Tower is literally a site that can’t be missed. It towers above all of the other multi-story buildings in the city and its unique architecture makes it impossible to overlook.
The pixel architecture of the tower has earned it the nickname of the Pixel Tower but as unique as the architecture is it is not the primary reason to visit the King Power Mahanakhon Tower. The primary reason is to go to the rooftop skywalk and see the 360-degree panoramic view of the city. I intentionally left the skywalk out of this post because it is the topic of my next post and I will show what makes the skywalk so spectacular.
I do enjoy modern architecture and especially modern towers and the King Power Mahanakhon Tower is one of my favorite modern architecture towers that I have seen.
I love seeing historical sites, experiencing different cultures and spending time in beautiful nature but I also appreciate and enjoy the achievements of the times that I currently live. When traveling to foreign places to see spectacular sites, don’t overlook the amazing achievements of our current times!
