Patong Beach is the most popular beach resort town in Phuket, Thailand.

Patong Beach is famous for its 3 km long white sand beach lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and legendary nightlife. The beautiful long white sandy beach is stunning and it is busy during the day with beach goers enjoying the warm weather, warm water and beach activities. Alternatively, Patong has a well-deserved reputation as a party town with notorious nightlife. The beach town has hundreds of beer bars, go-go bars, dance clubs, massage places, discotheques, nightclubs and cabaret shows.

Things to do on the beach

Since Patong Beach is the most popular and most crowded beach in Phuket, don’t expect this beach to be an isolated beach paradise but there is plenty of space to relax and have a good time. Patong Beach has a row of coconut palm trees along the beach road that separates the shore from the action or the town. In the shade of the palms are stalls selling snacks and drinks, massage tables, and beachfront restaurants selling simple Thai and international dishes.

The top water activities are parasailing and jet skiing along with going for a swim in the designated swimming areas. There are plenty of parasailing, jet skiing operators and boat drivers all over the beach so it is easy to get into the action.

For a more relaxing time, there are areas with loungers available where people can rest under the shade of an umbrella or there is lots of open sand to lay down on your own mat or towel and soak in the sunshine.

There are many small stalls for dining on the beach under canopies and there are also wandering vendors that will bring the food to you selling a variety of food, drinks, snacks and ice cream.

Thing to do along Beach Road

The city side of Beach Road is lined with souvenir shops, bars, cafes and restaurants including international fast food chains such as McDonald’s KFC and Burger King.

After the sun goes down

After the sun set, the action moves from the sand and water to the other entertainment that makes Phuket famous, the nightlife! Patong is famous (notorious) for the wild nighttime parties that last from dusk to dawn! Its reputation is well deserved, almost anything is available and they don’t try to hide it. Phuket’s nightlife includes bars, nightclubs, live music, cannabis shops, ladyboys inviting you to take a photo with them for a fee and the famous Go-Go bars however most of the notorious nightlife is centered around Bangla Walking Street so it is easy to avoid the party side of Patong if it’s not your thing.

Away from the party scene, Patong’s nightlife has rooftop bars, beach clubs and live music bands that makes for an enjoyable evening after a fun day on the beach.

The Dust on My Shoes

I have always believed that people find what they are looking for and this is particularly true if you decide to visit Patong Beach. Patong is well known for being a place where people go for wild all night parties but that side of Patong Beach is easy to avoid unless that is what you are looking for. Aside from the party area, Patong Beach is a wonderful place for singles, couples and families to have a great vacation.

In addition to the beach and nightlife there are lots of things to do in Patong Beach. Some of the activities include shopping, night markets, watching Thai Boxing (Muay Thai Fights), jungle canopy walkway and ziplines or diving and snorkeling.

I have been to Thailand on seven separate trips but I had never set aside a meaningful amount time to see the beautiful fish and carol that live just off the Thailand coast. I always felt that I had not seen all of Thailand until I had seen the underwater life of Thailand and my primary purpose for visiting Phuket was to go snorkeling every day for a week. Each day I spent one to two hours snorkeling and then the rest of the time I visited other places in or near Phuket including Patong Beach. The snorkeling was better than I expected and the other activities were also great experiences.

Just because a location is famous for a specific activity doesn’t mean that there aren’t other activities that are equally exciting at that location. Seek the thing that you are looking for and I am sure that you will find it!
