Casa Batllo is a renowned building located in the center of Barcelona. The building is designed by Antoni Gaudi and is considered one of his masterpieces. Gaudi’s contribution to the original building was that he remodeled the building in 1904. The building is also known as the house of bones by the local because it has a skeletal quality to it as the photo below shows some of those bone-like resemblances.
Gaudi’s design style is identified as Modernism or Art Nouveau. Without a doubt his style would not be approved by many home owners associations. The outside façade is decorated with colorful broken ceramic tiles. A technique which he used in many of his architectural projects.
The roof is curved with a wave style top. The roof is covered with multi-colored ceramic tile which resembles fish scales. The top of the roof is crowned with a ceramic balls and the bottom of the roof is laced with unique tile that is spine-like.
The other unique feature of this building is the turret in the front of the building that is capped with a three dimension scalloped cross.
Everything about this building is unique and unlike anything surrounding it. It really feel like it is out of place on the street but it is a building that will make you stare at is and try to see all of the unusual details.
