The Spectra Light and Water Show is Singapore’s version of the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas although the Light and Water Show takes it to another level by adding colored lighting to the fountain, a projection show and lasers.

The light and water show is a free performance that takes place every night in front of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Each show lasts for 15 minutes and show times are at 8 and 9 PM with an additional show at 10PM on Friday and Saturday. The show combines laser, lighting projection and water all choreographed to orchestra soundtrack.

There are four main components to the show. The components are a 12 meter high glass prism, dancing fountains, colorful hologram projection and futuristic lasers.

The show begins as the glass prism lights up, fog begins to cover the water and lasers shoot from the Marina Bay Sands Hotel into the prism.

Glass Prism

The glass prism is the center piece that forms the heartbeat of the show. The glass prism changes colors throughout the show. Sometimes the prism is a single color but it can also change into a rainbow of colors making it appear to be the brains of the entire show.

Fountain

Shortly after the glass prism comes to life, the fog clears and the fountains start dancing to the music of the orchestra. The fountain jet vary the height of the water with the volume of the music. Additionally, the lighting changes colors and combinations of colors of the fountain water. It made me feel like I was watching a fireworks show of water.

Light Projection Show

Then all of the sudden a wall of mist shoots up and colorful light images are projected onto the mist making the images look like a 3D hologram suspended over the water. This part of the show is like looking into a giant kaleidoscope that is turning with the rhythm music.

The fountain show and art projection show overpower the laser show but the laser show can be best seen by going to the opposite side of the waterfront.

Laser Show

The laser show is a combination of white and green lasers the shoot out from the upper deck of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The laser show is part of the light and water show but it is like watching a completely separate show because the fountains and projection show is too far away to see and you will be unable to hear the music but the best view of the laser show is from farther away.

The Dust on My Shoes

I am a big fan of public outdoor shows. I always try to see New Year’s Eve fireworks, I never miss the fountain and fire shows in Las Vegas or the fire shows in Melbourne and Da Nang but the light and water show in Singapore is my favorite.

The show incorporates so many different elements. The show is modern with the use of lasers and projection onto a wall of mist, it has energy as I could feel the power of the fountain jets bursting water high into the air and the use of a virtual rainbow of colors all in perfect coordination with music.

Watching the show left me with the feeling that I had just seen a futuristic art show in a modern setting surrounded by the modern architecture of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the Helix Bridge and the ArtScience Museum with the Singapore Skyline in the background.

The Spectra light and water show is a stunning performance that is a “must see” when visiting Singapore.
